Choose the right plasma cutting equipment.

Shandong Rayman Machinery Co.,Ltd | Updated: Aug 25, 2018

Do you need to purchase a cutting machine for regular maintenance and maintenance? Are you currently working on projects that require a high-performance cutting machine? Or do you need a new device to replace the chainsaw you are using now? All of the above are enough for you to consider plasma cutting. Now that the market is flooded with cheaper, more compact and portable machines, newer technologies are boosting revenue and making it easier to operate, it may be time to take the time and money to consider plasma cutting equipment. Plasma cutting is easy to use, excellent in cutting effect, fast in working speed and high in efficiency.

1 what is plasma cutting technology?

The simplest explanation is to use a high-speed jet of ionized gas from the compression port to achieve cutting effect, which is plasma cutting technology. High speed ionized gases, that is, plasma, transfers electrons through the plasma flame to the workpiece. The plasma will heat the parts and melt the metal. High velocity ion gas streams blow the molten metal mechanically and cut the metal open.

2 how do plasma cutting and flame gas cutting compare?

Plasma cutting can only be effective on metals that act as conductors --- low carbon steel, aluminum and stainless steel are typical examples. When cutting low carbon steel, operators will experience more high-speed and deeper cutting effect.

Flame gas cutting is carried out by burning high temperature cutting or by oxidizing metal cutting. Therefore, its application scope is limited to the steel, a kind of ferrous metal which can be treated by oxidation technology. Metals such as aluminum and stainless steel produce oxides that restrict further oxidation. This makes it impossible for traditional flame gas cutting to deal with this kind of material. Plasma cutting, which is not resistant to oxidation, may be effective in cutting aluminum, steel, and other conductive metals.

And different kinds of gases can be used in plasma cutting, most people now use compressed air for plasma cutting. Compressed air is available at most outlets, so plasma cutting does not require combustible gases and compressed oxygen as operating gases.

3 what can I do with plasma cutting?

Plasma cutting is the ideal cutting method for cutting steel and non-ferrous metal with a thickness of less than 1 inches. Flame gas cutting requires the operator to carefully control the cutting speed to maintain oxidation treatment. Plasma cutting has greater elasticity in this area. Plasma cutting is very good in some areas, such as cutting metal mesh, which is impossible to achieve when using flame gas cutting. In addition, compared with the mechanical cutting mode, plasma cutting speed is much faster, easier to carry out non-linear cutting.

4 what plasma cutting can not be completed, and flame gas cutting can be done?

Plasma cutting is more expensive than flame gas cutting, flame gas cutting does not need to connect the power supply and compressed air, which is easier for some users. Flame gas cutting is faster than plasma cutting when cutting the thicker part of steel.

5 how to choose when purchasing plasma cutting machine?

Once you feel that plasma cutting is suitable for your choice, you can refer to the following:

5.1 determine the thickness of the metal you most commonly want to cut.

The first factor to be determined is the thickness of the metal that is usually cut. Most plasma cutting machines are powered by cutting capacity and current size. Therefore, if you usually cut thin metals, you should consider low current plasma cutting machines. Also, although small machines cut a particular thickness of metal, the quality of the cut may not be guaranteed, and on the contrary, you may get almost no cut through results, but also residual metal residue. Each machine will have the best cut thickness range set - make sure that the setting fits your requirements. Generally speaking, the current output of a general plasma cutting machine is about 25 amperes.

5.2 choose your best cutting speed.

Are you cutting in the production environment or cutting speed is not very important? When purchasing a plasma cutter, the manufacturer should provide data (IPM, inches per minute) on the welding speed of the cutter in all metal thicknesses.

If you're going to cut for a long time or automatically set the cut, make sure to check the machine's workload cycle. The workload cycle is simply a continuous working time until the cutting torch is overheated and needs to be cooled. The workload cycle is usually determined by a percentage of 10 minutes as a standard. For instance. A 50 ampere current 60% workload cycle means that you can cut continuously for six minutes (100% in 10 minutes) at 50 amperes of current output. The higher the workload cycle, the longer you can continue to cut.

6 can this machine provide a high frequency startup option?

Most plasma cutting machines have a guide arc which guides the electric current through the air with high frequency. However, high frequency interferes with nearby electronic devices, including computers. Therefore, the way to eliminate these high frequency potential problems may be quite beneficial.

7 loss and life comparison

Plasma cutting torch has various external parts to be replaced, which we usually call consumables. The machine you need to find should be consumables.
